Green Steel Tracker
The global steel industry is responsible for almost 8% percent of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This tool tracks climate-aligned investments and supports informed decisions across policy, industry, academia, and civil society to achieve Paris Agreement climate goals. It is updated three times a year. Projects with technologies able to reach 85% emissions reduction, which is below 300 kg CO2 per tonne of steel, are included. Most recent update: September 2026.

The steel industry must transition because it is one of the world’s largest industrial sources of CO₂ emissions, and without deep decarbonization, it will be impossible to meet global climate targets. At the same time, the industry’s long-term competitiveness must be secured as regulations tighten, customers demand low-carbon materials, and clean technologies become the new standard.
