Green Steel Tracker

The steel industry is among the most carbon-intensive sectors globally

This tool tracks climate-aligned investments and supports informed decisions across policy, industry, academia, and civil society to achieve Paris Agreement climate goals. Projects with technologies able to reach 85% emissions reduction, which is below 300 kg CO2 per tonne of steel, are included.

The Green Steel Tracker is developed by LeadIT in collaboration with Lund University and Global Energy Monitor.

Why the steel technology needs a transition

The steel industry must transition because it is one of the world’s largest industrial sources of CO₂ emissions, and without deep decarbonization, it will be impossible to meet global climate targets. At the same time, the industry’s long-term competitiveness must be secured as regulations tighten, customers demand low-carbon materials, and clean technologies become the new standard.
