German company Salzgitter is one of the largest steel producers in Europe, with an annual output of around seven million tonnes and over 150 global subsidiaries.
Salzgitter has been manufacturing steel for over 150 years, commissioning its first blast furnace in 1860. Today, around 25,000 employees provide customers from a range of sectors with innovative and sustainable products. Its core business includes the production of rolled steel and tube products.
The Group today is also one of the most ambitious in terms of timing and scope of net-zero ambitions. Through its SALCOS® (Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking) program, together with partners from industry and research, Salzgitter has laid the foundations for virtually climate-neutral steel production. Through this initiative, the company plans to produce green steel by gradually replacing blast furnaces with direct reduction plants and electric arc furnaces, powered by electricity from renewable sources, such as wind power and green hydrogen.
