Why has JSW Cement joined LeadIT

The Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT), launched by Sweden and India at the UN Climate Action Summit in 2019, is a global initiative focused on achieving net-zero emissions in hard-to-abate industries. As a key player in the cement sector, JSW Cement has joined LeadIT to strengthen its decarbonization efforts and contribute to shaping industry-wide best practices.

This membership aligns with our ongoing sustainability initiatives, including increasing the use of alternative fuels, optimizing energy efficiency, and enhancing the circular economy through waste utilization. By joining LeadIT, JSW Cement aims to leverage global collaborations, share insights on low-carbon technologies, and reinforce its commitment to a net-zero future. This step further supports our broader ESG goals and complements our leadership in producing green cement solutions.

What do you hope to achieve as part of the Group?

JSW Cement has set clear decarbonization targets and remains committed to achieving a net-zero future. Through our membership in LeadIT, we aim to accelerate this transition by leveraging the initiative’s extensive industry network, expert guidance, and access to cutting-edge resources.

Being part of LeadIT enables us to collaborate with global leaders in industrial decarbonization, exchange best practices, and gain insights into emerging low-carbon technologies. This aligns with our ongoing sustainability efforts, such as producing low-carbon cement through higher blended cement ratios, utilizing industrial by-products like slag and fly ash, adopting alternative fuels and raw materials (AFR), and improving energy efficiency across our operations.

Additionally, our digital initiatives, including AI-driven energy optimization and predictive maintenance, contribute to reducing emissions and enhancing process efficiency. Through this partnership, we seek to reinforce our leadership in green cement solutions, advocate for policy frameworks that support sustainability, and contribute meaningfully to industry-wide climate action.

How will membership support your net zero ambitions?

JSW Cement’s membership in LeadIT will play a crucial role in advancing our decarbonization goals and accelerating our journey toward net zero in the following ways:

Global Collaboration: We will have the opportunity to engage with a diverse network of like-minded organizations, both in India and internationally, to share insights and adopt best practices for industrial decarbonization.

Policy Advocacy: As LeadIT is endorsed by governments and actively contributes to shaping industry policies and standards, we can provide valuable inputs and feedback to help influence future regulatory frameworks that support sustainable growth.

Enhanced Industry Leadership: Being part of a globally recognized and forward-thinking initiative will strengthen JSW Cement’s reputation as a sustainability-driven company committed to climate action.

Innovation & Funding Opportunities: Membership may facilitate collaborations with cutting-edge technology providers and potential funding partners, enabling us to explore innovative low-carbon solutions and scale up our sustainability initiatives.

What is your vision for the future of cement production in India?

The Indian cement industry is on a strong growth trajectory, driven by the government’s focus on infrastructure development and affordable housing. With an installed capacity of approximately 637 MTPA in 2024, the industry is expected to expand by another 210–220 MTPA, reaching 850–860 MTPA by 2029. Cement demand is projected to grow from 445 MnT in 2024 to 630 MnT in 2029, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.5–7.5%.

JSW Cement aims to play a pivotal role in this growth while maintaining leadership in sustainability and innovation. Our near-term goal is to evolve into a pan-India player by expanding our footprint into North and Central India, complementing our presence in the East, South, and West. From our current installed capacity of 20.6 MnT, we plan to reach 40.85 MnT in the near term, entirely through organic growth.

As we scale up, our focus remains on pioneering low-carbon cement solutions. Over the past decade, we have quadrupled our production capacity while cutting our emissions intensity by half. We plan to further strengthen our state-of-the-art R&D facility at Vijayanagar to drive innovations such as super sulphated cement, geopolymer-based solutions, and emerging low-carbon technologies, including carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). Our sustainability roadmap includes increasing clinker substitution by promoting blended cement, maximizing the use of alternative fuels, and enhancing process efficiency through waste heat recovery systems (WHRS) and digital technologies.

At JSW Cement, we see the future of Indian cement production as a balance between growth and sustainability—expanding capacity to meet rising demand while leading the industry’s transition toward low-carbon, resource-efficient manufacturing.

What will JSW Cement bring to LeadIT?

JSW Cement will contribute to LeadIT by sharing its sector expertise and extensive experience in implementing a circular business model. As a leader in green cement production, we have successfully integrated industrial by-products like slag and fly ash into our manufacturing processes, reducing our carbon footprint while promoting resource efficiency.

Being an active member of multiple national and global sustainability forums, we can enrich discussions by participating in LeadIT’s events, workshops, and working groups. Our engagement can help shape industry-wide best practices and contribute to knowledge exchange on decarbonization strategies.

Additionally, JSW Cement can support LeadIT’s initiatives by amplifying awareness of its programs and fostering collaborations within the cement sector. Through our insights and feedback, we can also contribute to the development and refinement of policies and regulatory frameworks that drive sustainable transformation in heavy industries.
