Cement decarbonization – Ethiopian solutions.
“The pathway for a net zero cement industry is complex, but it is a global and achievable target” – Ethiopian State Minister, H.E. Hassan Mohammed
In an important milestone for Ethiopia’s sustainable growth journey, the Ethiopian Ministry of Industry and the Ethiopian Cement Producers Association have signed a new agreement to work together to shape the future of low-emissions cement production.

The agreement was signed during a LeadIT event at the Africa Climate Summit in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. To advance decarbonization pathways, the parties will undertake a comprehensive technical and economic assessment of low-carbon cement technologies and of the policies required to enable their adoption. This analysis should include, but is not limited to:
- alternative clinker materials,
- energy efficiency improvements,
- renewable energy integration (including sustainable biomass fuels), and
- enhanced waste utilization.
The transition is an opportunity; it is an opportunity to future-proof our industries, to create new green jobs, to decrease energy costs through efficiency and to position Ethiopia as a continental leader in sustainable industrial manufacturing. The challenges are significant, but we have to solve them together.
H E Hassan Mohammed
State Minister, Ministry of Industry, Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia

Identifying practical technical options, investment needs, and policy instruments to transition Ethiopia’s cement sector toward significantly lower emissions, while safeguarding competitiveness, jobs, and sustainable growth, is a shared priority and foundation for collaboration between government and industry. This is a vital first step toward this ambition to grow sustainably while delivering on the country’s climate commitments.
The joint statement is signed, so this means countrywide clean climate initiatives will now be part of the cement industry. We will be working with the Ministry of Industry closely to further our decarbonization solutions and also address issues with climate financing.
